John 10.22-30 – Tuesday of the Fourth Week of Easter
What is the proof that we truly belong to Christ? In today’s Gospel Jesus responds with simple and decisive words: “My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me”. Being of Christ is not the result of reasoning or convenience. It is not a theoretical membership. It’s a relationship. It means recognizing his voice, trusting it and choosing to follow it.
This implies a concrete step: taking his word, his point of view, his way of looking at reality seriously. It is not enough to say that you are Christian but it is necessary to let yourself be guided by the Gospel in your daily choices. Saying you belong to Christ and then living contrary to his word is a contradiction. Not because of an external judgement, but because the coherence of a real relationship is missing. However, following Christ does not mean being a passive doer. It’s not about obeying mechanically. Rather, it is the response of someone who knows they are loved. It is the trust of those who recognize a voice that does not deceive.
In fact, Jesus adds: “I give them eternal life and they will not be lost.” Following his voice means enter into deep securitynot because everything is under control, but because we find ourselves protected. True belonging to Christ, then, is manifested in this trusting listening. Not perfect, not effortless, but real. It is the path of those who, day after day, learn to recognize that voice and let themselves be guided by it.
