It is not uncommon to see a baby or toddler sleeping on their stomach, with their buttocks higher than the rest of the body. An adorable position, but which also makes you wonder: why do they all like to sleep like this?

Parents have all been able to observe it: babies and young children frequently sleep with their butts in the air. They lie on their stomachs and tuck their legs under them, giving what is called the “frog position.” It’s absolutely adorable and a bit fun, and it also makes you wonder: why do they like to sleep like that?

There are several reasons why children position themselves this way, and the first is that it causes them to adopt a position similar to those they had in the womb before birth. As a result, it seems to them “natural and soothing” and gives them a feeling of relaxation and security explain brand experts Sleepout, cited by the Mirror.

However, it is not just a form of instinctive nostalgia for the time when they were not yet born. “This position naturally corresponds to the stages of the baby’s physical development. Bending the legs and lifting the buttocks relieves possible tension related to the development of the hips and other joints.continue the specialists. And to those who wonder if this is really a comfortable position to sleep in, the answer is yes…

For toddlers: “Sleeping with their bottom up mimics the cozy, confined environment of the womb. This helps soothe the baby and can improve the quality of their sleep. Babies are extremely flexible; curling up like this is comfortable for them and allows them to maintain this position without difficulty while they sleep.” Nothing says an adult would feel the same way!

If seeing babies sleep like frogs makes us melt and they like it for all the reasons cited above, that doesn’t mean we should let them do it. Yes, this position means that they sleep on their stomach, but this is dangerous because it increases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). This is why experts agree that children must sleep on their back before the age of 1 year. Clearly, if your child is less than 12 months old, it is recommended not to let him sleep like this, nor place him in this position.
