Mt 9,32-38 – Tuesday of the XIV Week of Ordinary Time
«When they went out, they presented him with a mute man possessed. Once the demon was cast out, that mute man began to speak.” The silent demon that today’s Gospel tells us about is perhaps much more present in our lives than we can imagine. Evil, in fact, always tries to interrupt communication, to break relationships, to build distances which, with the passage of time, they become impassable walls.
How many families are divided due to silences that no one has the courage to interrupt anymore. How many friendships end not because of a major betrayal, but because at a certain point you stop really talking to each other. How many relationships become ill because what should be said is withheld, or because words are used to hurt rather than to meet. It’s no coincidence that the first effect of the liberation brought about by Jesus is precisely the restitution of the word. The man starts talking again.
Christ, when he enters our lives, always reopens the possibility of relationship. It gives us back the ability to say what we carry in our hearts, to ask for forgiveness, to explain, to listen, to start a dialogue again. We should then take immense care of our words. The good or bad of a large part of our life can pass through them. A word can encourage or destroy, bring you closer or further away, heal a wound or make it even deeper. But it’s not enough to simply talk. We must learn to communicate, that is, to use words to build communion. Evil wants us to be silent when we should speak and aggressive when we should be silent. Jesus instead gives us back a free, true word, capable of creating relationships.
