Collecting shells on the beach is one of the little pleasures of summer. But is this habit always allowed? Here’s what you need to know before slipping a few into your bag.

Whether to decorate your home or simply to bring back a souvenir from your vacation, shells are one of the summer must-haves. If you’re planning to spend a few days by the sea, you might be tempted to slip a few into your luggage. But this gesture, as common as it is, is it really authorized?

What are the regulations?

In France, the regulations stipulate that the collection of shellfish, like that of sand, is prohibitedthe Environmental Code considering the harvest as an attack on the maritime public domain, weakening the coastlines. However, a tolerance is observed provided that the integrity of the beaches is not directly or indirectly compromised. Concretely, you can collect shellfish within reason, that is to say by small quantity and for your personal use.

You should also know that certain places in France are subject to specific regulations, particularly in the case of protected sites. The fine can be up to 1500 euros. In any case, to respect wildlife, never collect live shellfish. Abroad, check the legislation of the country in question, but be aware that collection may be prohibited to preserve the environment in certain areas, as is the case in Sardinia for example.

Note that the collection of pebbles is also prohibited, however, that of frosted glass is authorized.

Where to find shells for your DIY projects?

If you need a lot of shells for a DIY project or you are not going to the sea, you can also turn to a wholesaler or specialized stores. Another option: why not keep the shellfish after stocking up at the fishmonger? Oysters, mussels, scallops, cockles, periwinkles and other seafood will be a perfect raw material after a good cleaning and you will thus avoid throwing them in the trash.
