This health routine allows you to combine well-being, recovery and longevity.

In the age of hyperconnection and overloaded schedules, finding a balance in life often seems like an obstacle course. Between work, family and fatigue, maintaining your health is a daily challenge. Faced with this imbalance, a simple method exists and it is a doctor who suggests it: the 8-8-8 rule.

This method involves dividing your 24-hour days into three 8-hour blocks. Recommended by Dr Amitabh Parti, head of the internal medicine department at Fortis Memorial Research Institute (India), it is based on a first essential pillar for the body: sleep. Sleeping 8 hours a night helps repair the body and stimulate its immune defenses. It is also essential for making the brain function properly, consolidating memory and regulating hormones. Beyond duration, respecting our internal biological clock is the key to preventing excess weight, diabetes and depression. A basic rule allows you to gain an extra hour of sleep and get closer to 8 hours.

The next 8 hours must be dedicated to work. Setting limits on your professional time helps prevent overwork and anxiety. “Limiting work to eight hours protects against chronic stress which promotes insulin resistance and hypertension, two common problems in my clinic” underlines Dr Parti to ndtv.com. By limiting stress, you also protect your heart from the harmful effects of tension hormones like cortisol.

The last block of 8 hours is devoted to personal life, between leisure, family and relaxation. Far from being wasted time, these 8 hours for yourself are essential to recharge your physical and mental batteries. This time allows you to practice physical activity, ideal for the heart and joints, to cook healthy meals, to see loved ones to avoid isolation, or to relax. Of course, everyone can adapt this time to their needs. For example, “a patient with prediabetes (…) needs this time to be devoted to functional physical activities and structured meals, and not just leisure time”specifies Dr. Parti.

“The 8-8-8 rule is a useful framework, a reminder that rest, work and self-care each deserve significant time. But true health comes from personalizing this routine, not following it to the letter.”nuance the doctor. It is entirely possible to adapt this model according to your age, your profession or your health, because small everyday habits and regularity count much more than perfection. As Dr. Amitabh Parti concludes, “The greatest benefit lies not in replicating someone else’s schedule, but in adapting healthy principles to one’s own body, lifestyle and medical needs.”.
