Sweaters, cardigans, turtlenecks: not all knits are created equal. According to style experts, one of them definitely stands out and is worth the investment.
A beautiful knit when it’s a little chilly immediately adds style. You still have to choose the right material. Between natural, synthetic fibers and more or less successful blends, the label matters as much as the cut. Fashion professionals recommend favoring a very specific knit.
“Before purchasing a knit, it helps to know the difference between different wools and blends“, explains Kim Appelt, celebrity stylist. On the shelves, some polyester-based blends impress with their softness and low price. However, they can lose their hold after a few washes. Conversely, natural fibers offer thermo-regulating properties, better moisture management and a more pleasant feeling on the skin.
Wool remains a safe bet for those looking for warmth and structure. “Wool is more durable and retains its shape bettere”, explains Kim Appelt. In a coat or sweater, it maintains its hold and adapts to temperature variations. It also wicks away moisture, which is an appreciable material as a first layer.
Cashmere occupies a special place. “It is timeless“, says fashion expert Tara West. “It offers a silky drape while providing warmth and lightness. Even the simplest cuts look more luxurious in cashmere.“The specialist advises choosing a denser, double-thread cashmere, which will keep its shape better. However, it can pill and remains fragile if it is too fine or of average quality.
Other natural fibers deserve our attention. The alpaca is becoming more and more popular. “Alpaca is one of my favorite knitted materials, because it’s warmer than traditional wool while remaining surprisingly lightweight“, explains Tara West. “Naturally hypoallergenic, it is ideal for people sensitive to wool. I love its fluffy texture which gives knitwear a luxurious and elegant look.” Blended versions are often preferable to 100% alpaca models, because they shed less and hold better.
Among the knits available, experts agree on one point: the right knit combines comfort, durability and ease of maintenance. And there is one that ticks all of these boxes, considered “the essential piece of clothing par excellence“according to Tara West: the cotton-cashmere blend.”Cotton-cashmere blends offer the breathability of cotton and the softness of cashmere, while being much less fragile. I recommend them to my clients who are looking for a luxurious everyday look, without maintenance constraints.“, confides the specialist. Adapted to different seasons, it regulates temperature, is more resistant to use and remains pleasant to wear.
In any case, there is one golden rule for any knit: never hang up your knitting. Folding is always the safest solution to prevent fabrics from stretching.
