“The French colonies”, “movies from the 70s”, “the old cafes”, “another era”, “old-fashioned equipment”… This is what the French people interviewed by Ademe think about when the Ecological Transition Agency talks to them about ceiling fans. Representations that “are probably explained by the age of the mechanism”deciphers Ademe in a guide to ceiling air fans. A mechanism which actually dates from the 16th century but which seems “generally unknown to users”wonders the Ecological Transition Agency.

While, due to global warming, heat episodes are increasing, and we are going through a new period of heatwave particularly trying in poorly insulated homes, ceiling fans nevertheless benefit from being brought up to date. “Thanks to its blades, the ceiling fan brings fresh air up and quickly cools the room, up to minus 6 degrees »assures Little Worker, a start-up specializing in energy efficiency, which also rents a “ecological solution”.

Stéphane Plaza tries to boost his real estate empire after his conviction

A saving of 350 euros per year compared to air conditioning

In fact, based on a use of 8 hours per day, the annual energy required for a ceiling fan is established between 58 and 146 kWh (kilowatt hour), or between 177 and 234 kWhaccording to the models, according to the “Brise” guide developed by three engineers and an architect, including Robert Celaire, lecturer at the National School of Arts and Crafts and member of the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Forms, Architectures and Environments. A classic air conditioning unit, like those used in bedrooms, consumes more than… 2,300 kWh per year.

That is to say if “the impact of this difference in energy consumption on the consumer’s bill, and on the environmental footprint, is not the least”underlines the guide. Based on a price of 0.18 euros for one kWh, the ceiling fan allowssave more than 350 euros per year compared to air conditioning. An amount which more or less corresponds to the cost of purchasing and installing the ceiling fan, which “will therefore be profitable within the year”highlights the Brise guide.

Heatwave: this real estate choice that many will regret not having made

Ceiling fans eligible for MaPrimeRénov’

The price of a ceiling fan, installation included, actually fluctuates between 200 and 400 euros on averagefor blades from 132 centimeters (the most common diameter) to 140 cm. This is two to three times less than the cost of purchasing and installing an air conditioning unit for a room of 10 to 15 square meters, estimated by the Brise guide at between 600 and 800 euros. Not to mention that, for air conditioning, the costs of cleaning and recharging with refrigerant must be added to the annual electricity expense.

The bill for ceiling fans can also be reduced thanks to MaPrimeRénov’. Since January 1, 2024, the cost of their installation can be financed by the main public aid for the energy renovation of private housing, as part of a major renovationcombining several work gestures. The problem is that, since June 23 and until mid-September, it is no longer possible to submit a MaPrimeRénov’ application file for a large-scale renovation, due to congestion at the counter.

Heatwave: do I have the right to install a swimming pool on my balcony?

The ceiling fan, effective against mosquitoes!

Last advantage of the ceiling fan, but not the least when you have been waking up for a few weeks with small white spots on your arms and legs: it helps limit the health risks linked to bites. mosquitoesthe rotation of the blades generating a sufficiently high air displacement to prevent them from flying properly.
