Inspired byHarry Potter or Chronicles of Narniait’s a childhood dream that we’ve all had at least once: having a secret passage in our home, a hidden room known only to us. But in our modern apartments, the challenge is often much more complicated to achieve. How to optimize each square meter without sacrificing aesthetics? How to integrate technical or intimate elements into the heart of living spaces, without spoiling the decoration? This is the headache faced by many city dwellers who are sorely lacking in space, but refuse to compromise on style.
And this is precisely the challenge that Adélaïde Quenin, interior designer at Mon Concept Habitation, brilliantly took on. Imagine a classic, elegant Haussmannian living room, with its beautiful parquet floor, a gilded mirror overlooking an old-fashioned marble fireplace. In front of her, a large, completely empty white wall. Immense potential, but also a huge volume problem to manage to integrate contemporary comfort without distorting the charm of the old. Most of us would have simply leaned a low piece of furniture and a few picture frames against it. The interior designer saw the opportunity to create a secret passage to another room, located behind.
From the front, we discover a magnificent custom-made bookcase which frames the fireplace. The work of curves and graphic niches is of rare elegance. But the real stroke of genius lies in a detail invisible at first glance.
The trick? Adélaïde Quenin has succeeded in creating a hidden door which blends completely into the library which welcomes it. As subtly revealed in the photos above, an arch perfectly integrated into the design of the furniture opens delicately. Inside, surprise: there is the apartment’s toilet! Covered in terrazzo tiles and equipped with suspended lines, they invite themselves into the living room without ever being noticed.
The result is simply sublime and proves that intelligent tailor-made can solve everything. Enough to make us really want to copy the idea for our own interior, right?
