You must have come across it in your family home or at a country garage sale. Relegated for a long time to the status of old, slightly kitschy vintage junk, this star object from the 60s and 70s is making a resounding return to our interiors. Better yet: it panics collectors and design enthusiasts, ready to spend small fortunes to get their hands on a vintage model. If you have one that is gathering dust in the attic, now is the time to keep your eyes peeled!
To know if your treasure is really worth gold, examine it from every angle. Value is based on three essential criteria. The patina and fixings first: the sixties models feature a unique honey or dark patina, impossible to imitate. Look at the back: vintage fasteners are often wire or jute rope, never modern staples or plastic. The condition of the strands is also important because the rattan must not be split, broken or too loose. The tighter and more complex the braiding, the higher the value.
Finally, the signature: certain models were imagined by big names in design like Louis Sognot or Franco Albini. An original label or an identifiable design makes the price skyrocket. But then, which room are we talking about exactly? Drum roll… This is the mythical rattan mirror, and more particularly its sun or witch version!
If you own a classic model of medium size (around 40 cm), in good condition but unsigned, you can easily get between 50 and 120 euros for it. On the other hand, if you are lucky enough to own an XXL piece, a very elaborate “flower” model (see the photo above), or a creation by a designer in raw rattan, the prices literally soar on online flea market sites, oscillating between 250 euros and more than 600 euros for the rarest pieces.
