Do you want to clean your mattress thoroughly or erase an unpleasant surprise? Yellow or stained with urine, blood or coffee, there are simple solutions to get rid of it without calling a professional.
Night sweating and small everyday accidents like urine, blood or food stains always end up damaging a mattress. Maintaining it is therefore essential to keep it clean and as healthy as possible. First remember to vacuum it regularly to eliminate the dust that accumulates there, especially if you suffer from allergies or respiratory problems. Using a mattress protector or mattress pad is also a good solution to prevent stains, because these covers are much easier to clean than a mattress. Finally, when faced with unexpected blood, urine or food stains, you must act quickly. Here are some tips for cleaning your mattress.
Generally speaking, you should not wait for stains to take care of your mattress. Every time you change the sheets, consider vacuuming your entire mattresson both sides, to remove dust. Also, air your mattress by opening the bedroom windows wide. When you do this, remember not to replace the clean sheets and duvet immediately to let the mattress “breathe” during the day. Finally, you can spray a few drops of essential oilsmixed with water in a sprayer, to perfume and sanitize the mattress. Chamomile, marjoram or lavender are ideal for sleep.
Steam cleaning a mattress
For the regular maintenance of your mattress but also to remove certain stains and restore its whiteness, the steam cleaner could be an interesting solution. Start by dusting the mattress using a vacuum cleaner then use your high-pressure steam cleaner to avoid getting the mattress too wet. Allow the mattress to dry thoroughly and the moisture to evaporate before installing the sheets.
A special textile stain remover can also help you remove stains and will also be useful for regular mattress maintenance. The Bissell brand, for example, offers devices that spray water (with or without detergent added) and suck it up at the same time for an effective result.
Since the mattress cannot be washed like a duvet or pillow, it must be clean by application. To remove yellowed stains – particularly due to perspiration – here is how to do it:
- Mix some soda crystals in hot water
- With a damp sponge rub the yellowed areas.
- With a dry cloth, blot damp areas.
- End up pour talcum powder on the mattress and leave it to act during the day so that it absorbs all the humidity.
- Then use the vacuum cleaner to remove the talcum powder.
The mixture of hot water and soda crystals can be replaced with white vinegar. Talc can be replaced with baking soda to which we added a few drops of essential oils (lavender or eucalyptus to purify).
By intervening as quickly as possible, you will be able to limit the damage to the haloed mattress of our dear toddlers. Clean withsparkling water by repeating the operation several times. When the stain is gone, dry with a dryer. Consider placing a mattress protector under the sheets so that the inconvenience of bedwetting doesn’t happen to you twice.
Nothing could be simpler: melt two aspirin tablets in half a glass of cold water and rub the stain with a cotton pad soaked in this mixture.
You can also rub with a pad soaked in white vinegar and hydrogen peroxideor prepare a paste with water and starch, spread it on the stain and let dry then brush. Also, very cold water mixed with salt will do the trick.
Your dear and loving one has given you the joy of bringing you breakfast in bed. But after the idyllic moment, you realize that your mattress is dotted with coffee stains. Immediately blot the dirt with a cotton soaked in hydrogen peroxide or bleach, or even white vinegar. Rinse and scrub vigorously with clean water. Care should be taken with the use of products such as bleach. Namely, open the windows wide and dress in clothes that are not afraid of projections.
For the drying, two options: either you dab the mark with a terry towel, or you arm yourself with your hairdryer to save time.
