Who says prolonged absence from home, says precautions to take before leaving it. Here’s one that really doesn’t take long and that you’ll thank us for taking.
Holidays, I forget everything… Maybe not after all! With all the things we have to think about before hitting the road, a train, a plane or a boat, sometimes we skip certain essentials. So yes, we go through our mental checklist: turn off the water, close the windows, unplug appliances that consume unnecessarily, water the plants… And everything seems to be under control. We slam the door, with a light heart, ready to finally disconnect.
But it is often at this precise moment that we forget a small detail, which can have big consequences. It’s such a trivial gesture that it gets overlooked half the time, even though it doesn’t take more than 30 seconds flat. And believe my experience and that of my partner, to ignore it is to expose yourself to a particularly violent return from vacation, accompanied by a headache that we could have done without.
Imagine the scene. After ten days of relaxation, you push open the door of your home, your mind still on vacation. And therein lies the drama. An indescribable smell, heavy and tenacious, hits you as soon as you enter. An atmosphere worthy of an olfactory horror film that instantly ruins the entire benefit of your vacation. You walk back up the trail, your heart pounding, to face the culprit.
And this culprit is quite simply the full garbage bag left quietly in the kitchen and/or in the bathroom. We threw in one last apple core or sanitary protection just before leaving. Serious error. In a few days, behind closed doors and with the summer heat, your waste has transformed into a veritable incubator of bad odors and, worse, into a five-star palace for midges…
So, to save yourself an intensive cleaning session and hours of airing when you get home, integrate this reflex into your departure routine. Just before you turn the key in the lock, grab the damn bag and throw it away. Your “you” of the future will say a huge thank you by finding a fresh and welcoming cocoon. Have a good trip !
