Living to an average age of 86 is not for everyone. However, a country neighboring France succeeds better than all the others. Care, diet, climate… several ingredients explain this world record.
We often think of Asia, and particularly Japan, when it comes to longevity. However, according to data published by Our World in Data in 2024, it is a country bordering France which today has the highest life expectancy in the world: 86.6 years on average. Several factors explain this age.
The first element that changes the situation: the standard of living. This territory is one of the most expensive places on the planet, and this is also reflected in access to care. Residents benefit from a health system recognized for its quality and can consult quickly when they need it. Prevention, screening, medical monitoring… all of this plays a major role over the years. It is better to resolve a problem before it sets in, and that is precisely what easier access to care allows. Obviously, having the means also helps you take better care of your health on a daily basis.
But reducing this first place to a simple question of money would be a bit quick. Geographic location also matters; we also remember that there are “blue zones” in the world, where the most centenarians live. Located on the shores of the Mediterranean, this country benefits from a pleasant climate almost all year round. As a result, it is easier to walk, spend time outside or simply move a little more every day.
And then there is what we find on the plates. Here, the cuisine gives pride of place to vegetables, fruits, fish, olive oil and fresh produce. A study published in 2022 in the Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging also shows that people who adopt this type of diet generally live longer and in better health. Thus, the country that dominates all others in terms of longevity is none other than Monaco.
The principality shares its border with France and today has the highest life expectancy in the world, with an average of 86.6 years. San Marino comes in close behind with a life expectancy of 85.9 years. Hong Kong completes the podium with 85.8 years thanks to an excellent health system, many green spaces and a city where it is easy to get around on foot.
