Director of the Parisian Roland-Garros tournament, former player Amélie Mauresmo keeps one foot in the world of tennis. But the former court star also has another foot… in wine!
Ex-tennis player Amélie Mauresmo has developed a true passion for wine over the years. So much so that she spent a lot of money there, in order to build up a breathtaking personal cellar in which bottles of expensive grands crus were stored.
Amélie Mauresmo, a great wine lover: how many bottles in her cellar?
It is on the Basque coast that Amélie Mauresmo set down her bags a few years ago, precisely in Anglet. And the former sportswoman, now aged 46, alternates with her professional obligations in the capital, as director of the French Open at Roland-Garros. As soon as she returns home, she can enjoy her children – Aaron and Ayla – and her friends. In her house, Amélie Mauresmo has a very impressive wine cellar, built over time.
“Around 20-22, I was introduced to it by my trainer, Alexia (Dechaume, editor’s note). She was passionate and it immediately gave me an emotion”she informed Basque Coast Madam. Before detailing: “During my career, obviously, I was not often able to taste but I read a lot and I bought at the same time to build up a cellar which must reach 4,000 or 5,000 bottles today. This passion grew, and blossomed even more after my career.”
“All my friends know that when they come to our house for dinner, they will drink well!”completed the former world number 1, who accumulated $15 million in tournament winnings.
Amélie Mauresmo put thousands of euros into a single bottle of wine
If Amélie Mauresmo began her exceptional collection with modest Bordeaux wines, “a more accessible vineyard”she also bought very expensive bottles like a Château Yquem 1937. Vintages whose prices are enough to turn the eye. For example, she also bought a bottle of Château Mouton Rothschild from 1945, today worth almost 30,000 euros… 29,600 euros to be completely precise!
“I happened to buy old vintages on websites. I remember acquiring my bottle of Château Mouton Rothschild 1945 on eBay. But I haven’t risked it for a few years! Looking back, I did very well by taking risks on old vintages. Now, I keep my cellar running by buying young vintages which I let age”, she confided to The French Wine Review.
