Present in millions of French homes for decades, this everyday object has become a true decoration icon. But behind this success lies a company today facing a critical situation.

Some objects pass through generations without us really paying attention to them. We find them at grandparents’ houses, in vacation homes or in the back of a cupboard, and they instantly evoke childhood memories. Long considered simple everyday objects, they are now being brought back into the spotlight by fans of vintage decoration. Their timeless design and robust construction appeal to a new generation. However, behind this newfound success, the future of one of the most emblematic of them today hangs on a crucial decision.

However, its history is closely linked to French heritage. For decades, this object accompanied the daily lives of millions of people, to the point of becoming almost invisible as it was part of the decor. Even today, it is displayed both on family tables and in decoration boutiques, driven by the return of authentic materials and objects designed to last. But behind this popularity lies a much less reassuring economic reality.

The object in question is of course the famous Duralex glass. For many French people, it remains inseparable from meals in the canteen. Many people still remember this little ritual of turning the glass over to discover the number engraved on the bottom and joking about their age. Behind this childhood memory, however, hides a much less pleasant reality. Placed in receivership at the beginning of June, the company is now looking for a buyer to ensure the continuation of its activity. Without a viable solution, the future of this symbol of made in France could be compromised.

This situation may come as a surprise as Duralex seems to have regained favor with the public. The return of vintage interiors, the craze for durable objects and the attachment to made in France have contributed to putting these famous glasses back in the spotlight. But producing glass remains a particularly energy-intensive activity. Despite the takeover of the company by its employees in 2024, production costs, necessary investments and cash flow difficulties ended up weakening the cooperative.

The receivership does not mean that the famous glasses will disappear overnight. The factory continues to produce while the court studies takeover offers. The coming weeks will be decisive for the future of this emblematic company. If a buyer is selected, production could continue. Otherwise, a page in French industry could be turned, taking with it an object that several generations of French people have seen pass across their table.
