That’s it, summer has arrived and to accompany it: a lovely heatwave. It’s the perfect time to enjoy an ice cream! In order to choose it wisely without spoiling your pleasure, here is advice from a nutritionist.

Summer often rhymes with relaxation and frozen delights. When the heat rises, what better way to cool off? Then comes the difficult choice: ice cream or sorbet? Contrary to popular belief, one is not necessarily better than the other, especially among industrial products. It all depends on what you are looking for.

In the show Le Mag de la Santé, presented by Dr Jimmy Mohamed, nutritionist-dietician Sophie Janvier clarified this point: “The sorbet will be a little less caloric because there is no fat compared to ice cream which contains roughly the equivalent of 3 to 6 grams of cream for one scoop.“On the other hand, sorbet is often sweeter: it contains 12 to 14 grams of sugar for a scoop, or 2 to 3 pieces.

To choose your little pleasure carefully, the professional has a tip that changes everything: “When you buy industrial ice cream, you should not only rely on its nutritional values, she warns. You should also look at the list of ingredients on the labels.“If you love ice cream, it is important that the first ingredient is milk fat. For the sorbet, fruit.”There should be a minimum of 25 to 45% fruit. And then, for ice creams, you need at least 5% milk fat.“, continues Sophie Janvier. Be careful, however, with the sugar and lipid content which must not exceed 22 g and 15 g respectively for a 100 g jar.

Finally, the nutritionist gives one last piece of advice: to look at the length of the list. Unsurprisingly, the fewer ingredients, the better. We also avoid references that contain glucose-fructose syrup and additives. In terms of quantity, Sophie Janvier recommends one or two scoops, maximum to please yourself without getting frustrated. This summer, we no longer choose between our figure and indulgence: we simply learn to read between the lines.
