The face of ATMs as we know them is gradually changing. Here are all the advantages and functionalities found on these new “Cash Services” machines which are being deployed throughout France.
Many automatic teller machines (ATMs) are gradually disappearing from the landscape. Even if the French remain attached to cash, its use is declining. Cash payments still represent around half of transactions between individuals, according to a European study by BearingPoint, but their management is increasingly expensive for banks. Maintenance, security, supply… these machines are considered unprofitable, especially when they are rarely used or located too close to each other.
To replace these traditional distributors, banks have chosen to pool their services. BNP Paribas, Société Générale, Crédit Mutuel and CIC are deploying new joint machines, called “Cash Services”. By the end of 2026, around 7,000 devices must be installed across the country to replace all the old distributors. Concretely, these ATMs no longer bear the name of a particular bank: a change which may surprise at first, but which allows you to use any terminal without worrying about its establishment.
These machines still allow you to withdraw banknotes, including denominations of 5 euros, but not only that: they also offer the possibility of withdrawing coins (either with your credit card or by exchanging banknotes). Indeed, customers of partner banks can also deposit notes, as well as coins, and also checks. From now on, it is possible to make a deposit of checks or cash without a slip, and the machine is responsible for scanning the items and then printing a receipt. And for those who are put off by automation, the old method with an envelope to complete yourself is still possible. Depending on the customer’s bank and the bank card used, the new ATMs also allow you to view and print your account balances, and even make transfers.
A lot of things are changing, but don’t panic, the user experience remains familiar. Once the card is inserted, the ATM recognizes the customer’s bank and displays an appropriate interface. The main advantage? These “Cash Services” machines therefore make it possible to avoid the fees usually applied when withdrawing from another bank, since the networks are now shared between several establishments, including their respective subsidiaries such as Hello Bank or Monabanq for example.
This transformation is not without consequences. As explained The World last year, the installation and maintenance of these new distributors relied partly on local authorities, with profitability difficult to achieve in areas with little traffic. Some municipalities could therefore limit their number, or even not equip themselves, at the risk of widening inequalities in access to cash, even though many businesses still impose a minimum amount for payment by card. To avoid unpleasant surprises, the Cash Services website has provided a map allowing you to locate ATMs near you.
