A type of bag that is already causing panic on the web and which will be on all the beaches this summer season.
A summer favorite par excellence, this material is essential on all our shoes when summer comes. Like a Proust madeleine, it revives childhood memories, sometimes painful, sometimes happy, in the minds of those who wore it. The famous Méduse – known as “jelly shoes” in English – have also made them the heart of their success. If it has been trendy again for several seasons, its link with the 80’s nevertheless pushes it to appear kitsch, while its plastic appearance can easily tip it into cheapness. However, recent years have restored the image of PVC – known as “polyvinyl chloride” – in the hearts of stylish girls.
Since 2024, he has reinvested in trendy conversations, strutting in the shoes of accessible brands and luxury houses – like Chloe, Loewe Or Jimmy Choo – and conquers an accessory that he had not touched for several decades: the bag. It is above all the very inspired version of the Hermès Birkin, the so-called “Jelly Firkin”, which has many fans on the internet. TikTok videos on the subject average between 10,000 and 157,000 likes. A craze widely carried by Gen Z, who willingly shows it off in all their daily looks – the famous Outfit of the Day – or in their “What’s in my bag” face cam sessions.
An inspiration that we imagine drawn from the world of celebrities: last summer, some of them took their luxurious leather Birkin to the beach, provoking heated debates on the web. Among them, Kate Moss, who showed off her 40,000 euro model like a beach bag. With this new plastic version, fashionistas on a limited budget will be able to imitate the star, without fear of emptying their savings account or damaging their beloved bag during their beach session. Another significant advantage: the fact that it is waterproof. Enough to protect your belongings from possible incidents linked to sea water, swimming pools, or sand. In addition, it comes in tangy colors that smell good of summer, such as turquoise blue (so trendy), lemon yellow or even fuchsia pink.
And if we imagine that the rendering is of low quality, we allow ourselves to be polluted by countless clichés: the designs of said bags are intended to be as neat as those of their animal or vegan leather counterparts. PVC is lacquered and glossy as usual, of course, but now it is also available in a matt version. Will you succumb to the summer bag trend?
