Pope Leo speaks of a “choral invocation for peace”. Remembering that the whole Church, in the month of May, he prayed “especially through the prayer of the Holy Rosary”, he underlined that this, “like an unbroken chain, entrusted the peoples tormented by war to the intercession of the Virgin Mary”. He then hoped that the “Divine Wisdom” can “illuminate the conscience of those in authority and guide decisions towards the sincere search for a just and lasting peace”. Then recalling that today the twenty-fifth Relief Day is being celebrated in Italy, he said he was “close to sick people and those who take care of them” encouraging “all those who spread the culture of proximity and care”.
Previously he had explained that, «with the solemnity of Pentecost, a week ago, the Easter season has ended” and he explained that it is always possible to rethink our journey. He commented on the Gospel of John which speaks of Nicodemus’ night-time visit to Jesus. «He went to visit him – at night, so as not to be seen – eager to get to know this mysterious Master better and to ask him questions», underlines Pope Leo. The Lord, hosting him, gives importance to this search, surprises him, «suggesting to him that it is possible even for an adult to be reborn; he let him understand that the life of God could transform his life. Jesus spoke to Nicodemus about the Holy Spirit, he illuminated his night with the truth that in today’s celebration resonates in all our churches: “God loved the world so much that he gave his only begotten Son, so that whoever believes in him should not be lost but have eternal life”.
Just like Nicodemus, we too “are at home in the Mystery of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit”, says Leone. And remember that “the life of God is wonderful and engaging, it gives peace to our hearts, often so restless, and makes us meet brothers and sisters in the joy of the Spirit. The Trinity makes us love everything and everyone: we discover that every creature is made for communion, relationship, meeting. And, by contrast, we understand why the divisions, polarizations, contempt for diversity brings destruction, sadness and aridity to the world.”
After meeting Jesus, Nicodemus, who “was part of the Sanhedrin, the Council of the leaders of Israel”, when he hears words of contempt towards Jesus, invites “everyone to listen to him before condemning him. He had received from God, through Christ himself, the Spirit of communion, which opens the heart to new truth and true novelty. Whoever does not welcome this Spirit grows old quickly, in lament; he finds himself alone, he never has a celebratory spirit.” Instead, on this very Sunday we celebrate the feast. «God’s celebration is our celebration. This is why Saint Paul writes to the Corinthians: “Be joyful, strive for perfection, encourage one another, have the same feelings, live in peace and the God of love and peace will be with you”».
