Marble is an elegant and resistant material, but also very fragile because of its high porosity. An incorrect cleaning method can quickly dull its surface or leave irreversible marks. Whether you have a marble floor, table or worktop, discover all of grandma’s tips for cleaning, removing stains and making marble shine without damaging it.

Summary

Whether you want to clean a floor, a splashback, a worktop or a decorative marble object, pay attention to the products used: this fragile material cannot withstand just any cleaner. How to clean white marble, remove a stain or revive yellowed marble without damaging it? Discover all our tips and natural recipes using black soap, baking soda and other gentle products to make marble shine lastingly.

Avoid like the plague: products with too high acidity, such as vinegar, lemon, anti-limescale. More generally, all chemical and aggressive cleaners (bleach and other strippers) should be avoided. They risk attacking the protective film of the marble. This barrier must remain intact, because it is what prevents stains from penetrating the material.

Prefer natural solutions. In the lead, the Marseille soap or the black soap.

With black soap or Marseille soap

  1. Soak a few drops of liquid soap on a damp sponge
  2. Rub gently
  3. Dry quickly to obtain a smooth and shiny surface, without halos.

With baking soda

  1. Mix baking soda in hot water
  2. Dampen a clean cloth with the solution and rub the surface
  3. Dry and polish the surface with a soft cloth.

First, immediately absorb any stain that has just occurred with absorbent paper and clean with Marseille soap or black soap. For more stubborn stains, you can mix soda crystals to water. Fully biological methods like white stone or the clay stone work too.

To clean yellowed marble, you can useoxalic acid also called sorrel salt diluted in water. Scrub the solution onto the marble using a soft brush before rinsing and then drying to avoid water spots.

Marble owes its beauty to its lustrous and shiny character. To maintain its shine, it should be polish regularly. Here is a grandmother’s recipe that has proven itself:

  1. Prepare a paste of 1/3 baking soda and 2/3 pumice powder.
  2. Apply in small circular movements.
  3. Rinse then dry.
  4. To provide more effective protection, wax the surface with regular wax.

Another solution to find a shiny marble is to coat a cloth with gasoline and rub gently. People who are easily bothered by strong odors will not use it. Last tip: apply baby milk. The marble will absorb the milk. Thus nourished, it will shine brightly.
