Gas prices still very volatile
To help consumers navigate, the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) publishes a reference indicator every month. “The CRE publishes each month a benchmark gas sales price, which does not correspond to a precise offer but serves as a compass for consumers »explains the institution. But this compass reflects an unstable market. After a slight decline in April, the trend is clearly reversing. “ It increases by 15.4% on May 1a consequence of the rise in prices on wholesale markets, itself linked to the war in Iran”specifies the CRE. In fact, this development represents an average increase of €6.19 including tax on the May invoiceproof that fluctuations remain rapid and concrete for households.
Which gas supplier should you choose to pay less?
Faced with this instability, the question of the supplier becomes central. However, there is no single answer: the offers are constantly evolving. At any given time, however, certain players stand out with prices significantly lower than the average.
Top 5 cheapest gas suppliers in 2026 (€/kWh)
- TotalEnergies – Special Gas offer
– 0.0929 €/kWh (tax included)
Indexed offer, among the cheapest on the market currently. - Wekiwi – Gustave Gaz offer
≈ 0.0918 €/kWh (tax included)
Very competitive fixed price offer, but with specific conditions. - OHM Energy – Extra Eco Gas offer
≈ 0.1013 €/kWh (incl. tax)
Indexed offer, often below the benchmark price. - Plenitude – 1 year Pleniweb offer
≈ 0.1026 €/kWh (incl. tax)
Fixed price offer, good compromise between price and stability. - EDF – 2-year Avantage Gaz offer
≈ 0.1085 €/kWh (tax included)
Fixed price offer, more expensive but reassuring.
These prices must be put into perspective with the CRE benchmark price, located around 0.104 €/kWh in April and close to 0.125 €/kWh in May 2026. Some suppliers therefore remain significantly below the market, which can represent real savings in the short term.
How to easily compare gas offers in 2026?
To effectively compare offers, consumers can use a free public tool. The website of the National Energy Mediator offers an official comparator which allows you to obtain a clear vision of the prices offered by the different supplierss, depending on its profile and consumption.
Accessible to everyone, this independent comparator helps avoid unpleasant surprises and quickly identify the most competitive offers of the moment, in a market where prices are constantly changing.
Fixed or indexed gas price: a strategic decision
In addition to the provider, the type of offer plays a decisive role. “Fixed price offers guarantee that the supply portion of the price will not change during the contractual period”underlines the CRE. They allow you to secure your budget, even if they are sometimes slightly more expensive initially. Conversely, indexed offers follow market developments. “They sometimes offer better prices but are very volatile”specifies the institution. They can therefore be advantageous but also expose to rapid increases.
The benchmark price, a compass to compare
The benchmark price therefore remains the simplest tool for orientation. “It can be a good indicator for comparing supplier offers”recalls the CRE. One reflex is enough: compare your current contract to this benchmark. If the difference is significant, a change of supplier may prove relevant, especially as it is free and without obligation.
To limit the impact of increases, the choice of supplier is essential, but it is not everything.
“The main thing is to compare the offers carefully when subscribing”insists the CRE.
Adapting your contract to your use (main or additional heating, surface area of the accommodation, level of consumption) also allows you to optimize your bill. In such a fluctuating market, it is the combination of these parameters that really makes the difference.
These prices must be put into perspective with the CRE benchmark price, located around 0.104 €/kWh in April and close to 0.125 €/kWh in May 2026. Some suppliers therefore remain significantly below the market, which can represent real savings in the short term.
