First Reading
From the Acts of the Apostles
Acts 18,23-28
After spending some time in Antioch, Paul left: he then traveled through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, confirming all the disciples.
A Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, a cultured man, expert in the Scriptures, arrived in Ephesus. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord and, with an inspired spirit, spoke and taught accurately what referred to Jesus, although he only knew the baptism of John.
He began to speak frankly in the synagogue. Priscilla and Aquila listened to him, then took him with them and explained the way of God to him more carefully.
Since he wanted to go to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. Once there, he was very useful to those who, through the work of grace, had become believers. In fact, he vigorously refuted the Jews, publicly demonstrating through the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.
Word of God
Responsorial Psalm
From Psalm 46 (47)
A. God is king of all the earth.
Or:
R. Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah.
All people, clap your hands!
Acclaim God with shouts of joy,
for terrible is the Lord, the Most High,
great king over all the earth. R.
He subjected the peoples to us,
he has placed the nations under our feet.
He chose our inheritance for us,
pride of Jacob whom he loves. R.
God ascends amid acclamations,
the Lord with the sound of the trumpet.
Sing hymns to God, sing hymns,
sing hymns to our king, sing hymns. R.
Gospel
From the Gospel according to John
John 16,23b-28
At that time, Jesus said to his disciples:
«Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask the Father for anything in my name, he will give it to you. So far you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be full.
I have told you these things in a veiled way, but the hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in a veiled way and will speak to you openly about the Father. On that day you will ask in my name and I do not tell you that I will pray to the Father for you: in fact the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.
I came from the Father and came into the world; now I leave the world again and go to the Father.”
