No need to look far to relieve the itching of a mosquito bite: here are the four natural solutions validated by our pharmacist.

A mosquito bite (especially a tiger mosquito) can be extremely itchy. The first thing to do is not to scratch and to disinfect the pimple (for example with Biseptine®) to avoid infection. Then there are four almost essential remedies to calm the sting, and you don’t have to look far!

Cider vinegar: the effective antiseptic

Apple cider vinegar is rich in acetic acid. Known for its antiseptic properties, it disinfects and accelerates the healing of wounds. On a sting, it is a good ally to soothe the itch. Often, it is recommended to opt for cider vinegar and organic products. To reduce itching, it is recommended to place a few drops of vinegar on a compress and apply it to the bite for a few minutes.

Plantain, essential

To relieve mosquito bites, a plant will become your best friend: plantain. This weed is a natural antihistamine that grows close to the ground. Thanks to the compounds in its leaf, pain decreases because the venom is controlled. Take a few leaves and squeeze out the juice they contain in your hands. This liquid can then be directly applied to the skin. Other leaves can be used in the same way such as dandelion.

Lavender essential oil: anti-inflammatory

Faced with itchy bites, essential oils provide rapid relief. “This is for example the case of true lavender and aspic lavender essential oil (not lavandin)“, specifies Tina Géréral, Pharmacist. Thanks to its anti-inflammatory effect, it reduces the urge to scratch. “Massage the painful area for a few seconds with two drops of lavender, diluted in a dab of vegetable oil (argan, sweet almond, jojoba)“, explains the pharmacist.

Clay + lavender to put directly on the bite

The benefits of green clay are now well known. Among its advantages, it is an antibacterial and an antiseptic. It also manages to get the irritating substance out of the sting. For even more effectiveness, a dab of green clay can be mixed with a few drops of lavender essential oil. It is then recommended to place the mixture directly on the skin at the site of the sting. Once the paste is dry, remove it and rinse.

During pregnancy, certain natural remedies are prohibited. Therefore, it is not recommended to use essential oils. On the other hand, no problem for green clay, plant and vinegar. In any case, ask your pharmacist for advice before applying anything to your skin. In babies and children, the first step is to disinfect the bite with soap and water. Apply a cold water compress or a cloth with ice cubes on it. To soothe the itch, also consider putting baking soda in the bath. “Don’t forget to cut children’s nails short to avoid secondary infection due to scratching.“, reminds the pharmacist. Certain signs may suggest an allergy, a rapid medical consultation is necessary. Among the warning symptoms: swelling of the neck and face, hives, severe cough, etc.

Thanks to Tina Géréral, pharmacist.
