If you are looking for a solution to spend cooler nights this summer, you may fall for an Action product at a low price. But does it keep its promises? The editorial team tested it for you.
When heat waves and heat waves continue throughout the summer, all the tips are good to cool down and better tolerate high temperatures. Action understands this well and offers many products designed to improve your summer comfort: arrivals include many fans but also more original solutions. Among the products that we can discover on the shelves, one in particular seems very tempting as the mercury has been acting up in recent weeks. But isn’t the promise too good to be true? We checked.
While getting to sleep can be really difficult when temperatures are high, it’s hard not to be tempted by a cooling mattress protector. Priced at 12.95 euros, reference 3223919 has a Cool Touch surface with a cool touch and promises to sleep pleasantly cool during hot nights. The cool surface should also allow you to relax more quickly. That was all it took for us to check out. And good news, once unpacked, the textile is actually quite cool to the touch: enough to be enthusiastic about before settling into bed.
At bedtime, the experience is rather satisfactory: the textile gives an additional feeling of freshness and therefore promises a good night’s sleep. Unfortunately, this impression does not last. After about an hour of lying on it, the initial coolness was completely gone. Worse yet, the mattress protector seems to trap heat at the points of contact with the body. And when temperatures are already difficult to bear, adding a few degrees becomes unbearable.
This disappointment is not surprising. Contrary to what its name might suggest, this type of mattress protector does not produce cold. The feeling of freshness felt at first contact comes mainly from the fabric, which seems cooler than the skin when you lie down. But as the minutes pass, the material absorbs body heat and in turn warms up. In the case of our test model, made mainly of synthetic materials, this heat then seemed to evacuate less well than with our usual bedding. Result: the pleasant effect of the first minutes quickly disappears and gives way to an unpleasant sensation as the night progresses.
Our advice? Keep your 12.95 euros. During the night of testing, we found more comfort by simply removing the mattress protector than by keeping it on the bed. To sleep better during periods of high heat, it is better to rely on light sheets, a room kept cool during the day or a fan. Less original solutions, but significantly more effective.
