We generally think that a sugary breakfast, taken on the go, has no real impact on the figure. It’s quick, reassuring and almost a cultural habit. But this idea, as widespread as it is, completely misses what a good breakfast should provide. For dietician Nichola Ludlam-Raine, the problem is not so much eating in the morning, but choosing foods that aren’t really nourishing. “The biggest mistake I see people make is choosing a high-carb breakfast that lacks fiber, protein, and plant-based diversity,” she says. A combo which, according to her, promotes cravings, low energy and excess pounds. In short, a poorly thought-out breakfast hampers your day more than it starts it.
The idea is simple: if your morning plate is made up of only sugary products, white bread or processed options, it will cause your blood sugar levels to skyrocket. As a result, two hours later, hunger returns stronger, concentration falters and fatigue sets in. Thus, the specialist suggests swapping white bread for a wholemeal or sourdough version, richer in fiber and less harsh on the body. She also recommends focusing on good fats, those found in oilseed butters, and adding fresh fruits and seeds.
And among the most common habits, one stands out as the worst. Although it may be unanimously appreciated on the shelves and in the kitchens, it has all the faults. Very sweet, without fiber, without proteins, ultra-processed and often eaten on white bread, it is all wrong. According to Nichola Ludlam-Raine, this “morning treat” East “consisting mainly of sugar and oil”. It doesn’t provide much in terms of nutrients, but triggers a real taste addiction. In short, chocolate spread is considered the worst possible choice for those who want to lose weight.
You will have understood, the next time you squint at this sweet pot at breakfast, move on. Choose healthy and nourishing products and treat yourself to this treat, in small doses, at another time of the day.
