Save time and money! Regular defrosting is the key to boosting the performance of your freezer. Here are the best solutions to melt ice in record time.
We’re not going to lie: defrosting is often the forgotten item on our to-do list. However, this layer of ice is not just an aesthetic detail: it silently eats into your budget by increasing your energy consumption. We can also end up storing food that is expired or no longer really edible because it is too frosty. Thanks to these grandmother’s tips, take the time to defrost your freezer to clear things up and get back on a good footing.
Perhaps take advantage of a long vacation or a time when your freezer is not very full to carry out this defrosting.
- To begin with, sort it out among all frozen products and throw away those that are damaged or past their use-by date. For remaining products, store them in a neighbor’s freezer if possible, or if there are few, place them in an insulated bag with ice cubes for the duration of cleaning.
- Place a mop at the bottom of the freezer, unplug the appliance or place the freezer section in standby mode, and let the ice melt and drain.
- If the ice layer is particularly heavy, you can speed up the process by scraping with a wooden spatula as soon as it begins to melt. Do not use sharp objects: you could not only injure yourself but also permanently damage the freezer coating.
- Once the ice cream has completely melted, clean the freezer using a damp sponge with a little baking soda or white vinegar.
- Turn the appliance back on and put away your products again. Your freezer has been given a new lease of life!
Are you the impatient type, and defrosting a freezer seems too long? Especially if the layer of ice seems particularly thick to you… Fortunately, there are some tips for quickly defrosting your device.
- For example, you can place a pan of boiling water inside the freezer, after unplugging it. Close the door and let the steam work: the ice will melt more quickly.
- You can also pass a cloth soaked in very hot water on the freezer walls if the ice is particularly stubborn.
- Please note that there are also de-icing products specially adapted for the freezer and also anti-bacterial, to make your task easier.
Still for safety reasons, it will be preferable to unplug your appliance before defrosting it, unless the layer of ice is really minimal. In this case, you can quickly remove it without unplugging your freezer and defrost your freezer on. Some models, especially the most recent ones, also offer a automatic defrostwhich will therefore not require unplugging. This will allow you to clean your freezer quickly without unplugging it.
