We’ve all continued to use a cracked phone and told ourselves it was “not that bad.” However, certain breaks can cause serious damage and turn a smartphone into a risky device.
The scenario is almost banal. The phone slips from the hands, bounces on the ground and the screen leaves with a crack that we end up accepting. At first, it doesn’t change much. The touchscreen still works, the image remains correct and the smartphone continues to operate normally. So many prefer to wait before considering repairs.
However, a broken screen is never just “damaged glass”. In a smartphone, everything is compacted, glued, assembled to the millimeter. The surface that you touch with your fingers also protects sensitive components placed just below. A crack can therefore gradually weaken the entire device, even if the consequences are not immediately visible.
In reality, severely cracked screens already pose a first concrete problem: the glass becomes unstable. Tiny pieces may break off. As a result, you can be slightly injured while scrolling a video or sending a message. The other problem concerns humidity. A cracked phone isn’t really protected like it used to be. Small amounts of water can seep into the device over time, sometimes simply from rain, sweat or ambient humidity. And once inside, it can start to attack certain electronic components.
But, in addition to these visible elements, a very specific sign must alert you at all costs: heat. If the cracked area becomes even slightly hot, the problem should be taken seriously. According to several specialists, overheating around a broken screen can indicate a short circuit, moisture infiltration or a battery-related problem. And in the most serious cases, this battery can end up swelling, leaking or even catching fire. A cracked phone that heats up is therefore not just “tired”: it is a device that is better to turn off quickly and have examined before the situation deteriorates.
We know that between the guarantees which do not always cover breakage and the sometimes high prices, many of us try to keep the cracked screen as long as possible. But letting the situation drag on can be costly, especially if the battery or internal components also start to be affected. Better to be warned.
