Serums half full, pots of cream barely opened… Why do we accumulate so many cosmetic products without ever managing to empty them? Here is the answer.

A half-full vitamin C serum, an abandoned moisturizer after three uses, and a dried clay mask in the bottom of a drawer… If this scenario reminds you of your bathroom, rest assured: you’re not alone. In the age of skincare mania, we accumulate bottles of beauty products at a breakneck pace, without ever being able to finish them. Far from a simple lack of rigor, this phenomenon hides well-oiled psychological mechanisms and a formidable marketing strategy.

Why do we fall for a new product when our routine is far from exhausted? The response from consumer psychologists is fascinating: we do not buy a cream, but the hope of its result. Each new product embodies the promise of perfect, luminous skin as soon as you wake up. After a honeymoon phase, results are slow (cellular renewal taking at least 28 days) and disappointment sets in. Our brain gets tired and immediately searches for the next miracle molecule to reactivate the dopamine circuit.

If this spring is internal, an external factor amplifies it: FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), the visceral fear of missing something. On TikTok or Instagram, algorithms bombard us with “before/after” videos and revolutionary routines. As soon as an ingredient goes viral, we convince ourselves that our current routine, although functional, has become obsolete. The previous bottle is then relegated to the cupboard, not because it failed, but because it was disqualified by a new product deemed more efficient.

Modern marketing also leads us to believe that each area of the face and each time of the day requires a specific product. We are no longer looking for a global cream, but a specific active ingredient. However, this accumulation has a downside: beyond the swallowed up budget, it poses a real problem for skin health and ecology. By increasing the number of opened cosmetics, we often exceed the PAO (Period After Opening), symbolized by the small jar on the back of the bottles (6M or 12M). Using an expired product means applying a formula with degraded active ingredients, or even a breeding ground for bacteria that irritates the skin.

To break the cycle, experts recommend a cosmetic detox. A popular challenge is to refrain from making any purchases in a category (a serum, for example) until the current one is completely empty. You can also practice “skin streaming”: simplify your routine as much as possible (a cleanser, a moisturizer, an SPF). The fewer products you layer on, the less likely you are to irritate your skin, and the more likely you are to finish what you start.

The next time you add a serum to your cart, just one question to ask yourself: are you really going to use it until the end? Your skin (and your banker) will thank you.
