This washing machine accessory can become a real refuge for mold. A simple habit, to adopt once a month, allows you to refurbish it in a few minutes.

Every month, many households run a cleaning cycle in the washing machine, descale the kettle or wipe the fridge. However, a small element of everyday life often escapes this maintenance routine. Discreet, almost invisible through use, it can nevertheless become a real nest for residue, bad odors and mold. The most surprising? A simple trip to the dishwasher is often enough to restore its cleanliness and limit the accumulation of dirt which ultimately affects the hygiene of the appliance.

Over time, household products leave traces wherever they go. Liquid detergent, powder, softener or even hard water gradually form a mixture which clings to the walls. These deposits create a humid environment that is particularly favorable to the development of mold. The phenomenon is all the more frequent as washing at low temperatures has become more widespread. Result: black stains may appear, accompanied by unpleasant odors which sometimes give the impression that the laundry is no longer as fresh as before.

The accessory in question is the washing machine’s detergent drawer. Removable on most models, it is often neglected even though it deserves regular cleaning. Once a month, it is recommended to remove it completely to eliminate accumulated residue. In many cases, the tray can be placed directly in the dishwasher, allowing deposits to be effectively removed without special effort. This simple operation helps maintain good water flow and reduces the risk of mold growth.

However, some precautions remain necessary. First of all, it is better to check the device instructions to ensure that the manufacturer allows this cleaning method. If this is the case, place the container in the upper rack of the dishwasher and use a program at a moderate temperature, around 40 to 50°C. Very hot cycles can sometimes warp some plastic parts. It is also recommended to quickly rinse the container before putting it in the dishwasher to remove excess detergent or fabric softener still present.

For complete maintenance, also remember to clean the location of the tray inside the washing machine. A sponge or a small brush helps remove deposits that accumulate in corners. If black marks persist, soaking in hot water with white vinegar can complete the cleaning. Repeated once a month, this habit only takes a few minutes but helps preserve the hygiene of the machine, limit bad odors and prolong the proper functioning of the washing machine.
