We have long been sold the image of “total” maternity, between absolute control and flawless organization. But now, a new vision is gaining momentum, and it will make a lot of moms feel less guilty!

The dictionary of modern parenting continues to grow. Between “helicopter moms”, “tiger parents”, or even followers of positive education, each parent today seems attached to a label which defines their place in the family hierarchy. We all know the term “alpha male”, borrowed from the animal kingdom, which designates men with a dominant character. And at the opposite end, we would find “beta males”, considered more subordinate or docile. But in the world of motherhood, these terms also exist.

If “alpha moms” have nothing to do with this very narrow definition, we find similarities: they are the archetype of the mother in search of perfection and performance, who takes her role as family leader very seriously, to the point of sometimes falling into overprotection, but also into excess control and organization. But in 2026, it is high time to leave behind these injunctions to become the perfect mother. From now on, the “beta mums” are shaking up our standards… and that feels good.

As you will have understood, the “beta mom” is the opposite of this philosophy: she is more relaxed, more carefree, and allows herself to manage a more chaotic home, a less Instagrammable life. In short, to let go, without neglecting your parental responsibilities. As the British newspaper explains The Guardianthe beta mother chooses to “give more freedom” to her children to leave more to herself. For example, it canlimit their extracurricular activities so as not to have to constantly drive them” everywhere. It is also “let your children do their homework, make their own mistakes and organize their leisure time as they wish, to a certain extent”. If the house is not perfectly tidy, if you are not very involved in the parents’ association, or if you do not have a precise schedule for homework or bedtime, don’t panic: you are not a bad mother, you are just a “beta mum”.

The term “beta mum” has taken the English media by storm in recent years, and even more particularly in recent months. The time has therefore come to unwind: no more pressure around ambitious mothers who have to manage everything at home, and who always invest 300% to achieve this image of family success, even if it means forgetting themselves a little and sometimes running out of breath. The era of “tiger moms”, as they are also called, seems to be well and truly over for some mothers.
