Two years after its launch, the “Fujian” began its sea trials yesterday. China’s third aircraft carrier – and the first to be entirely designed and manufactured in China – set sail from Shanghai’s Jiangnan Shipyard, where it was stationed.
According to Chinese media, the trials are expected to last a maximum of a year before the ship officially enters service with the national navy. The new ship takes its name from Fujian province. Located in the south-east of China, it faces the island of Taiwan which is at the center of geopolitical tensions.
Planned successors
The integrated electric propulsion building measures 320 meters long and 78 meters wide. Beyond its dimensions, it is packed with cutting-edge technologies, including an electromagnetic catapult system, offering it the possibility of accommodating heavier aircraft.
Fujian will have successors: Beijing is aiming for a fleet of six aircraft carriers by 2035. China, which has the second largest military budget in the world after the United States, is engaged in a policy of modernizing its army.
