Mt 8,23-27 – Saturday of the XII Week of Ordinary Time
«And then a storm broke out in the sea so violent that the boat was covered by the waves. He, however, was asleep.” It is difficult not to recognize yourself in this page of the Gospel. There are times when life seems overwhelmed by events. Trials, suffering, disappointments and injustices crash down on us like impetuous waves. And the most painful sensation is precisely that of the disciples: God seems to be sleeping or not existing.
How many times do we also ask ourselves how it is possible for the Lord to remain silent in the face of what we are experiencing. If he really loves us, why doesn’t he intervene immediately? Why does he allow the storm to continue? It is the same question that crosses the heart of every believer at least once in their life. For this reason the prayer of the disciples also becomes ours: “Lord, save us, we are lost!”.
But Jesus, even before calming the sea, turns to the hearts of his friends: “Why are you afraid, you of little faith?”. He does not rebuke their weakness, but tries to heal the root of their anguish. Faith, in fact, does not consist in living a life without storms. It is not a guarantee that nothing painful will happen to us. Faith is the certainty that no storm can separate us from the presence of Christ.
Even when He appears to be sleeping, He is in the boat, and that changes everything. Because the problem is not the intensity of the waves, but the awareness of not being alone. The greatest miracle is not a life without difficulties, but a heart that, in the midst of difficulties, continues to trust. The proof of God’s existence is not that evil disappears from our lives. It’s that evil doesn’t have the last word. It’s that, even in the darkest nights, we find a strength that doesn’t come from us. It’s that, when all seems lost, we discover that we are still supported by a Presence that never abandons us.
