There are things that cannot be seen but can be heard with the eyes. This is the journey proposed by AKUSTIKAthe solo exhibition of Stefania Bologneseartist and mosaicist from Salento, hosted until 20 September at Fiermonte Museum in Lecce. A path in which the mosaic stops being just an image and becomes rhythm, vibration, memory.

Inaugurated on the symbolic day of the summer solstice, the time in which the light seems to stop and invite reflection, the exhibition was born within the cultural program of La Fiermontina Family Collection and is part of the celebrations for the seventieth anniversary of the love between Antonia Fiermonte (1914-1956), painter and violinist, and Jacques Zwobada (1900-1967), French sculptor and musician.

Curated by Antonia Yasmina Filali and Marta SicilianoAKUSTIKA brings two apparently distant worlds into dialogue: that of sound and that of matter. In Stefania Bolognese’s works, notes become surfaces, scores are transformed into shapes, sound waves find a new life through tiles of glass, stone, gold and light.

«Invisible architecture of creation, music drags the artist into the harmony of matter, strengthening the personal vision of the world through the ecstasy of emotions», explains Marta Siciliano, «decomposing the colors, the shapes fluctuate between stasis and movement. Multifaceted, the soul becomes mobile, diaphanous.”

Mosaic as a language of the soul

Each tile, in Stefania Bolognese’s work, becomes a note. Each color a vibration. Each composition a fragment of life. Mosaic, an ancient art linked to patience, precision and the stratification of time, in his hands surpasses the decorative dimension to become an emotional language.

The works on display tell of an artistic research in which two great passions coexist: mosaic and music. It is no coincidence that some compositions are dedicated to great protagonists of classical music such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Claude Debussy and Paul Hindemith, figures capable of transforming sound into invisible architecture.

The exhibition also creates an ideal connection with Jacques Zwobadaone of the central figures of the museum’s permanent collection. Before dedicating himself completely to sculpture, the French artist cultivated a deep musical passion, playing the cello. Two different paths that meet in the same intuition: art is born when it manages to give shape to the invisible.

As Zwobada himself wrote in 1962: «Shapes like colors are nothing but elements of expression, in the same way as the range of seven notes». For the French artist, the task of art was not simply to reproduce reality, but to create in the viewer an interior state capable of bringing out that profound self often hidden by the worries of everyday life.

Who is the artist

Born in Maglie in 1971, Stefania Bolognese he encountered art since childhood, when the afternoons spent drawing with his brothers around the table at home became the first space for his creativity.

After graduating from the “Francesca Capece” experimental high school in Maglie, Plastic Decoration section in Applied Art, she specialized at the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli in Spilimbergo, one of the most important institutions in the world for training in mosaic art. Her relationship with mosaics began almost as a love encounter during the restoration of the famous floor of the Cathedral of Otranto, where at a very young age she was fascinated by the light capable of transforming the stone tiles into movement and story. During his activity he has participated in important restoration sites, including those of the Otranto Cathedral and the churches of Santa Chiara and Gesù in Lecce. At the same time he developed a personal research in which mosaic dialogues with painting, sculpture and music. In his works, matter is never still: the tiles tilt, vibrate, occupy space, follow the rhythm of emotions. The result is a mosaic that not only represents something, but tells of an internal experience.

The Fiermonte Museum, a museum where art is experienced

It was not born as a traditional museum, but as an immersive place where art, technology and family memory intertwine. Part of La Fiermontina Family Collection, it is dedicated to the story of Antonia Fiermonte, a painter and violinist with a free and non-conformist character, protagonist of an intense love affair with Jacques Zwobada.

Between watercolours, sculptures and technological installations, the museum tells of a heritage made up of artistic passions and lives outside the box. Holographs, virtual reality and stereoscopic panoramas accompany the visitor in discovering the works by Antonia Fiermonte, marble sculptures by René Letourneur and bronzes by Zwobada.

The museum also hosts four thematic suites dedicated to different artistic languages: Suite Nocturne, inspired by the music of Antonia and Zwobada; Peplum Suite, dedicated to cinema and Enzo Fiermonte; Avant-Garde Suite, homage to painting; Marbre Suite, dedicated to sculpture. A place where art is not limited to being observed, but invites you to experience it: even in solitude, at night, with a torch in your hand, or by directly putting yourself to the test by creating paintings and sculptures. AKUSTIKA fits precisely into this philosophy: remember that art is a bridge between what appears and what remains hidden, between matter and spirit, between the noise of the world and that inner silence in which it is still possible to listen.
