Winter will slowly arrive and, with it, snowfall. But it’s not just in ski resorts that you can count on snowflakes. This city in France is the one most likely to be snowy from January onwards.
Starting 2026 under the snow is what awaits the inhabitants of several cities in France and Europe even if, as the years go by, snow sometimes becomes rare… A study reveals which city in France is most likely to be adorned with a white coat in the months to come.
In fact, a study carried out by Omioa platform specializing in booking trips to European destinations, relied on fifty years of weather and snow data in order to draw up a ranking of the cities of the Old Continent in which you can be guaranteed a snowy getaway.
Among the many European cities studied, three clearly stand out. At the top, we find Rovaniemi (in Finland) which displays a stratospheric score of 99% chance of having snow in December as well as in January or February. Suffice to say that in this city already known for its Northern Lights, children will be able to have fun making a bunch of snowmen and wear their sleds to the limit! Just behind, we find Tromsø (in Norway), known for its polar nights and its fjords that shine under the snow, and, in third place, Kiruna (in Sweden).
A 100% Nordic trio but the rest of the ranking leaves a little tricolor surprise, because yes, France also has its snowy nugget.
This is the city of Annecy. With an 87% chance of seeing snow fall each winter and a rate that rises to 93% to start the new year in January, the “Venice of the Alps” takes sixteenth European position. A great performance for this incredibly charming city, located on the edge of an almost unreal blue lake considered to be the cleanest in France and surrounded by mountains which turn white at the first frost.
And if Annecy is so attractive, it’s not just for its snowflakes. Its medieval center, its cobbled streets and its romantic canals become even more captivating under the snow. For snow sports enthusiasts, it is also the dream place because of its alpine resorts.
