Mc 10,32-45 – Wednesday of the VIII Week of Ordinary Time
The announcement of the cross that Jesus makes to his disciples on today’s page of Mark’s Gospel produces a strange effect on the disciples. While He speaks of his passion, suffering and total self-giving, the disciples react by arguing about who is the greatest. It is an attitude that may seem incomprehensible to us, yet it looks a lot like us.
In fact, very often, when we feel destabilized, afraid or distressed, we seek security in the things of the world: a role to occupy, money, power, visibility, the approval of others. These dynamics do not always arise from malice. They often arise from anguish. It’s as if we’re looking for something that makes us feel important so as not to feel the fragility that lives there. Jesus, however, unmasks this logic and proposes a completely different path: «But among you it is not like this; but whoever wants to become great among you will be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you will be the slave of all.”
It’s a radical revolution: Jesus is telling us that the true stability of life does not come from dominating, but from serving. Not from living centered on oneself, but from living “for” someone. Ultimately, a life focused only on itself inevitably becomes fragile and restless. Instead, when a person discovers that their existence can be a gift, service, concrete love, then they find a different peace. “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life.”
