Did you think your sweating was responsible for those yellowish marks under your arms? Make no mistake: it’s mainly because you’re not choosing the right deodorant!

There’s nothing more frustrating than putting on a white t-shirt and discovering, after a few hours, ugly yellowish marks under your arms. This phenomenon may seem inevitable because many believe that perspiration is solely responsible for this scourge. However, if you think about it carefully, it’s not sweat, the big culprit.

Sweat, itself, is colorless. It is composed mainly of water, accompanied by mineral salts and proteins. In other words, it shouldn’t stain your clothes as visibly. However, on light fabrics, and particularly on cotton, these yellow marks end up appearing, often persistently. Some blame the laundry, others the quality of the fabric, or even the frequency of washing. It is true that these factors can play a role, but they are not usually the cause of the problem. In reality, this phenomenon results from a very precise chemical reaction. Throughout the day, your skin naturally sweats. So far, nothing unusual. But when this perspiration comes into contact with certain components present in the products you apply daily, a transformation takes place. Slowly, the residue accumulates, oxidizes and eventually impregnates the fibers of the fabric. This is why these marks are so difficult to remove: they don’t just stay on the surface, they anchor themselves deep into the garment. Whose fault is it? To your deodorant of course.

More specifically, certain types of deodorants contain substances which, upon contact with sweat, cause these famous yellow stains. Aluminum salts, very commonly used for their antiperspirant properties, react chemically with perspiration. This mixture then oxidizes on contact with air, creating these unsightly halos, particularly visible on white cotton. Alcohol, also often present in formulas, can accentuate this phenomenon by weakening the fibers and facilitating the accumulation of residues. The solution is therefore simple: choose deodorants without aluminum salts or alcohol. By opting for gentler and natural formulas based on zinc and magnesium in particular, you considerably reduce the risk of seeing these yellow marks appear. So, to preserve the shine of your white t-shirts, you must above all choose carefully what you apply to your skin.

As you will have understood, to avoid these stubborn yellow marks, simply review your choice of deodorant. By opting for formulas without these components, your t-shirts will keep their original shine for longer.
