Mary L. Trump’s harsh words towards Uncle Donald are once again causing discussion. In a long interview given yesterday, June 21st, to Corriere della Serathe clinical psychologist and niece of the president of the United States describes the tycoon as “a man in decline, cognitively, psychologically and emotionally”claiming that his mental state would be «compromise» and also commenting on the recent tensions with the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni.
This isn’t the first time Mary Trump has spoken out publicly such harsh judgments on the head of the White House.

How my family created the most dangerous man in the world (Utet, 2026), the author had reconstructed the dynamics of the Trump clan, intertwining personal memories and psychological analyzes to tell the family roots and character of the American presidentdefined “the most dangerous man in the world”.
In the interview with the newspaper on Via Solferino, Mary Trump returns to attributing the US president’s recent attacks against Giorgia Meloni to a mix of political and personal reasons. «Donald is a misogynist. He doesn’t respect women, he has problems with them, especially strong ones», he states, arguing that the president tends to turn against his allies when he believes that they do not demonstrate absolute loyalty to him. According to the president’s niece, the progressive distancing of the Italian prime minister from the American positions on the conflict with Iran would have contributed to heightening tensions. In his opinion, Trump would also have felt isolated during the recent G7 and would have reacted by “doing what he has always done: projecting”, attributing responsibilities and difficulties to others.
Mary Trump also believes that the deterioration of relations does not only concern Italy. “It will get worse in every way as long as Donald is in command and as long as he continues to lose his shots,” he says, recalling how the president has also clashed with some of his closest allies, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The psychologist, who says she has no longer had a relationship with her uncle since 2017, she describes him as “a profoundly insecure man” and goes so far as to define him as “the weakest person” she has ever known. According to him, the president is progressively losing control of the narrative built around his public image and his skills.
According to Mary Trump, the basis of her uncle’s behavior was a constant fear of humiliation and an incessant need for approval. “The thing Donald wants most in the world is to be loved,” he explains, calling him “a black hole of needs”. To compensate for his insecurities, he argues, the president would need to represent himself as “the biggest, the best”, while tending to discredit those he considers more competent or authoritative than him.
During the interview, the psychologist also reiterates the concerns already expressed in the past on the state of the president’s mental healthspeaking of “undiagnosed and untreated psychiatric disorders” and “severe cognitive decline”. Even without formulating a specific diagnosis, remember that Donald Trump’s father, Fred Trump, suffered from Alzheimer’s and claims that “from a cognitive point of view there is something wrong”. Among the examples cited to support her thesis, Mary Trump indicates his uncle’s inability to accept defeat in the 2020 elections and what he describes as a chronic inability to show empathy and generosity towards others.
According to the president’s niece, the situation would be aggravated by the fact that Trump, compared to his first term, would have more greater margins of power and would be surrounded by collaborators interested above all in maintaining his trust. In his opinion, the Republican Party and some recent Supreme Court decisions would have further strengthened his position. Mary Trump also believes that pandering to the president is a strategic mistake. “He’s a weak person: if you capitulate to him, he draws strength from that,” he says, claiming that only a united and firm response from the Western allies could limit their initiatives.
As for the reasons for the current escalation, the psychologist identifies various factors: from tensions linked to the war with Iran to the approaching midterm elections. But, above all, it highlights the burden of the president’s emotional and psychological deterioration. «He has never been a successful man. He was never a self-made man. He has never been good at anything except manipulating people and the media.”says Mary Trump, convinced that her uncle has become increasingly dangerous because he is surrounded by people incapable of containing his impulses.
The psychologist also fears that, once her uncle’s political experience is over, the responsibilities will be attributed exclusively to him, without involving the Republican Party and the institutions which, in her opinion, would have favored his rise and consolidated power.
The last meeting between Mary Trump and her uncle dates back to the fall of 2017during a visit to the White House on the occasion of the birthday of his aunts Maryanne and Elizabeth. Since then, he says, relations have definitively broken down, not only with Donald Trump but with the entire family branch.
In the years since, the president has sued her a civil suit worth approximately 100 million dollarsthen concluded with a confidential agreement.
