John 14,27-31 – Tuesday of the V Week of Easter
«I leave you peace, I give you my peace. Not as the world gives it, I give it to you.” This verse from today’s Gospel would be enough to understand that the peace that Christ gives is radically different from what the world offers. World peace always depends on circumstances. If things are going well, if there are no problems, if everything is under control, then we feel at peace.
But it doesn’t take much for this peace to disappear. The peace of Christ, however, it does not arise from external conditions. It is a peace that can live even within the storm, in the darkness, in failure, in trials, even in the face of death because it is not based on what happens, but on a relationship. It is a stable peace, which does not end, because it rests on the faithfulness of Jesus towards us. It is not something we build, but something we receive.
We can imagine ourselves as little children clinging to their father’s arm. It is not their strength that makes them safe, but the fact of being held. It is that presence that becomes their balance. It’s like this for us too: no one is strong enough to build definitive stability on their own. But when our life is founded on Christthen we find a support that does not fail. True peace comes from here: from being looked after, from being held, from being in a relationship that does not collapse. And this is the peace that the Gospel gives us today. Not a momentary respite, but a stable foundation on which to rest your entire life.
