It’s a new drink that will get people talking. Made simply from a single natural ingredient, it has benefits on blood sugar levels, hydration of the body from the inside and the intestinal microbiota.
It’s a health habit long known as detoxifying and energizing for the body, but drinking a glass of water in the morning with a squeeze of lemon has now been overtaken by a new remedy. Offered in the form of an easy-to-prepare drink, it has exceptional virtues validated by scientific studies. Cardiologist Dr Alok Chopra explains that it can truly revolutionize metabolic and gut health. “It regulates blood sugar, is excellent for type 2 diabetes, promotes digestion, hydration and metabolism” he says in a video.
This new drink is made from a single plant ingredient. Its strength lies in its slightly gelatinous texture, obtained after infusion. This gel, rich in specific fibers called “polysaccharides”, is a powerful elixir for the digestive flora. A study showed that these fibers “improve the intestinal microbiota (…) and the mucous barrier”. In short, they act as natural prebiotics by “increasing Lactobacillus levels”good bacteria for the intestines. By stimulating these micro-organisms, the plant also promotes the production of protective fatty acids which repair the intestinal barrier.
And its action does not stop at intestinal comfort: the fibers contained in this drink “prevent blood sugar spikes”adds Dr. Chopra. The name of this miracle drink? This is okra water. A study has shown that regular consumption of okra can significantly reduce blood sugar levels, whether in the morning upon waking or after eating, while improving average blood sugar levels over the long term. By slowing down the passage of sugar into the blood, the drink prevents sluggishness and the cravings that go with it. It can be accompanied by two foods, also recommended to avoid blood sugar peaks and regain energy.
Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) belongs to the Malvaceae family, just like the hibiscus. Although it is cooked like a green vegetable, it is actually an elongated capsule-shaped fruit, native to the tropical regions of Africa and Asia. Very popular in Creole, African and Indian cuisines, okra is now easily purchased in Asian and exotic grocery stores and certain organic stores. Flavor-wise, it is distinguished by a very mild and delicately herbaceous taste, subtly reminiscent of zucchini, eggplant or green beans. To integrate it into his routine, Dr. Chopra gives his recipe: “Take 2 or 3 fresh okra pods, wash them thoroughly, cut the ends and make small incisions. Soak them in a glass of water overnight, filter the water and drink it in the morning on an empty stomach”.
Some precautions to be aware of with okra: its richness in highly fermentable fiber can cause discomfort or slight bloating in people with very sensitive intestines. In case of doubt or proven digestive pathology, medical advice is still recommended. Okra can also block the absorption of metformin (treatment for diabetes) and its richness in vitamin K can interfere with anticoagulants. In addition, its high oxalate content is not recommended in the event of a history of kidney stones, while its solanine concentration can aggravate joint pain in sensitive subjects. Finally, to avoid any bacterial proliferation linked to overnight soaking, wash the okra carefully and preferably place the drink in the refrigerator. It is strongly recommended to consume okra water in the morning itself after filtering. As it is an infusion of a raw plant in water, letting the drink stagnate for longer (even in a cool place) encourages fermentation and the development of bacteria. Never prepare your drink for the whole week in advance.
