When you apply your sunscreen, you almost always forget the same area of the face. However, this particularly fragile place is one of the most vulnerable to the dangers of UV rays.
It’s the first reflex of sunny days. Before each exposure, we methodically apply our sunscreen: the nose, cheeks, forehead, without forgetting the neck. We think we have perfectly shielded our face against UV rays. However, dermatologists are clear: there is an area of the face that we systematically forget.
In fact, according to a clinical study conducted by the University of Liverpool, almost 80% of people omit this area when applying their sun protection. The problem ? Ultraviolet rays do not forget this. They penetrate deeply, accelerating premature aging and drastically increasing the risk of skin cancer.
The skin in this specific area is up to 5 times thinner than that of the rest of the face. Poor in sebaceous glands, it has almost no natural hydrolipidic film to defend itself against external aggressions. This area that is so often neglected is the eye contour, including the eyelids and the hollows of dark circles. Because the skin is extremely thin and constantly stressed by our expressions and blinking (around 10,000 per day!), the effects of the sun are devastating and immediate: early appearance of fine lines (the famous crow’s feet), hyperpigmentation accentuating the appearance of dark circles and premature skin sagging of the eyelids. So, how can we remedy this oversight? To effectively integrate this area into your routine without discomfort, forget about classic body sunscreen, which is often too heavy and perfumed. Instead, opt for specific sun care products for the eyes. Formulated under ophthalmological control, they do not migrate into the eye. You can choose sun sticks (sensitive areas) which offer a solid and precise texture allowing targeted application without smudging. Finally, there are also tinted eye contours with SPF. In any case, do not spread the product roughly. Instead, apply a dab of cream to the orbital bone (the bony structure around the eye) and tap gently with your ring finger, from the nose outwards.
For optimal protection, invest in a good pair of CE certified sunglasses (category 3 or 4) with large or wraparound lenses. They will act as a total physical screen against direct UV and reflections.
From now on, you no longer have any excuses: this summer, you have to keep your eyes wide open when it comes to sun protection!
