Every existence seeks a center

Among the most fascinating figures of the Old Testament, Solomon it certainly occupies a special place. Biblical tradition remembers him as the wise king par excellence, the builder of the Temple, the sovereign whose fame went beyond the borders of Israel. Yet the first reading (1 Kings 3,5.7-12) takes us back to the beginning of his story, when all this is still only possibility. Solomon is little more than a boy and suddenly finds himself invested with an immense responsibility.

The ability to ask for anything does not ask for power, success, security or long life. He asks instead a heart capable of listening and to discern. His request does not primarily concern the possession of goods, but the ability to value them. Even before governing others, we need to learn to read reality correctly.

The issue is not just religious. She is profoundly human. We do not live in a time marked by the scarcity of possibilities, but by their proliferation. The options multiply, the horizons broaden, the opportunities grow. What becomes difficult is not only choosing between good and evil, but recognizing, among many possible goods, the one that deserves to occupy the center of existence. It is in this horizon that the parables of the treasure in the field and the precious pearl are placed. Two twin stories, short and intense, which have at their center not an idea, but an experience: that of an encounter that the value of things changes. The center of the two parables is not renunciation, but discovery. Jesus does not insist on what the protagonists leave behind, but on what they find.

The two scenes, although similar, introduce a significant difference. In the first case the treasure emerges almost by chance, within the ordinary plot of daily work; in the second it is the fruit of long and intentional research. In one case surprise, in the other perseverance. But in both, what happens is the same: when what is truly worth appears, everything else scales.

It all depends on one look. The same field, observed by others, would remain an ordinary field. The same pearl could go unnoticed by less attentive eyes. The final gesture – selling everything to purchase that good – does not arise from an imposed sacrifice, but from the internal logic of discovery.

The Gospel thus suggests that the quality of a life depends on what it recognizes as decisive. Every existence organizes itself around a centerto a good that guides choices and priorities. The problem is not the absence of a center, but its truth.

The parable of the net, which concludes the chapter, broadens our gaze. The net collects all kinds of fish: good and useless coexist in the same space, without immediate distinction. Only at the moment of the shore does the separation occur. The image recalls the complexity of realitywhere definitive discernment does not belong to the present, but to fulfillment.

The passage ends with a question addressed to the disciples: “Have you understood all these things?”. It is not an intellectual verification, but an understanding that involves life. Because in the parables dimensions are intertwined that cannot be separated: gift and search, surprise and decisionGod’s initiative and man’s response.

Treasure is not simply something to be found, but something that can be recognized. And when it happens, it is no longer necessary to explain why it is worth orienting everything towards it. It is the discovery itself that redesigns the order of things, with a sobriety that imposes nothing, but makes clear what matters.
