Do you dream of adopting a dog but you are still hesitant to take on this new responsibility? Here are some criteria to seriously consider to know if it is (or not) the right time.
Dogs have this touching power to melt hearts in a matter of seconds. A look, a wet nose, a wagging tail… and you can already imagine sharing your sofa and your walks with this faithful companion. However, behind this touching image hides a more demanding reality. Adopting a dog is not only about offering affection, it is also about committing to meeting its physical, emotional and social needs for many years. Sometimes, despite all the good will in the world, it is better to wait if we cannot offer him the stable and reassuring environment he needs.
Because a dog represents a real investment, in the broad sense of the term. You have to plan a budget for food, veterinary care, vaccines, possible sterilization, health insurance… Added to this are organizational constraints: who will take care of them during the holidays? Can you easily take it on the go? Are we often away from home? The associations also point out that a dog cannot stay alone for long hours every day without suffering. He needs presence, interaction and daily exercise.
So, what are the essential criteria to check before getting started? First, availability: are you ready to take it out morning and evening, sometimes in the rain or in the middle of winter? Most dogs need at least one to two hours of activity per day. Then, stability as well as the budget: does your professional or personal situation allow you to plan over 10 to 15 years? You also need to think about cohabitation with other animals or young children, as certain breeds have specific needs in terms of space or education. Patience is also essential: a puppy requires gradual learning (cleanliness, solitude, socialization) and even an adopted adult dog may need time to adapt. Finally, if you travel very often or regularly improvise weekends, are you ready to organize reliable childcare or to review your habits, or even to take him with you on a getaway?
These questions are not there to discourage, but to avoid a reality that is unfortunately too common. Every year in France, thousands of animals are abandoned, with a particularly worrying peak as the summer holidays approach. In 2024, the SPA took in nearly 44,000 abandoned or mistreated animals in its shelters. Unfortunately, many of these abandonments are linked to a lack of anticipation. Before adopting, it can be useful to meet shelter professionals, speak with a veterinarian, evaluate your annual budget and even test your organization by occasionally looking after a loved one’s dog.
Finally, we must not forget that each dog has its own temperament, energy and needs. Taking the time to choose an animal that fits your lifestyle is just as important as the decision to adopt itself. Asking yourself these questions in advance is not a sign of weakness, but of responsibility. Because when all the conditions are met, adoption becomes a magnificent, lasting and deeply enriching adventure for both the owner and the animal.
