Nearly one in three households is about to receive a little help from the administration. A welcome transfer, of 1000 euros on average, which will come at just the right time for holidaymakers.
It’s a little boost that will be good for the holidays! During the summer, between 10 and 15 million French households will receive a nice surprise on their bank account: a transfer which can sometimes amount to several hundred euros. If the tax calendar rarely brings good news for taxable persons, the summer period is different.
After completing the chore of filing their income tax returns in the spring, millions of French people will be entitled to a refund from the General Directorate of Public Finances (DGFiP). With withholding tax, you may end up paying more taxes than you actually owe. For all those who paid a surplus to the administration in 2025, it is therefore in the summer of 2026 that regularization will be made. And it should come at just the right time for vacationers.
As indicated by the Ministry of the Economy, reimbursements will take place at the same time as the distribution of tax notices. These will be sent to your personal space on the impots.gouv.fr website during the last week of July, between Friday July 24 and Friday July 31. The same dates therefore apply for refunds. For those who made their declaration in paper format, notices will fall between July 23 and August 28.
The reimbursement amounts vary depending on individual cases of course, but last year, 13.2 million households received this welcome transfer from the tax authorities, for an average sum of 1,017 euros. One thing is certain: the July residents concerned will be able to amortize a little the cost of their vacations already spent, while the August residents will start theirs with a little extra. Of course, taxes don’t really fund your leave, since that money was yours all along. But we might as well see it through the prism of “girl math”, this philosophy that we see everywhere on social networks: an expense that we return to you is, in a way, money that you earn… because you had surely forgotten its existence!
The other good news is that there is no action to take. The DGFiP specifies that the overpayment “will be reimbursed directly to the bank account known to the tax administration, if you have communicated one”. Otherwise, you don’t have to do anything either, at least not with the taxes: you will simply receive a check to cash at the bank yourself.
For the less fortunate, however, it is from September 25 that the ax will fall. On this date, those who still owe money in taxes will be taken in one go if the amount is less than 300 euros. If it is higher, the samples will be staggered in four installments, until December 28. A big blow to the Christmas budget.
