John 6,44-51 – Thursday of the Third Week of Easter
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him.” From these words of the Gospel of John it is clear that faith it is, first and foremost, a gift. It is not simply the result of human effort or well-constructed reasoning.
It is something that arises from an attraction, from an internal movement that God himself inspires in the heart. Only the Father can direct a person to go towards Jesus. Only He can ignite that profound desire that opens to faith. For this reason, faith is not imposed, it is not forced, it is not constructed artificially. When we pray for someone’s conversion, we don’t simply ask that they change their behavior or become “better.” We ask something much deeper: that the desire for Christ is born in him. May his heart be touched, attracted, oriented. And that is a powerful prayer.
We should believe in it more. Because gifts are not expected, but can be asked for. They can be awaited with humility and invoked with confidence. God is not indifferent to such a request. He does not remain deaf to those who ask for the greater good of another. Even if the times and ways remain mysterious, this prayer is never useless. The Gospel, then, invites us to have a specific attitude: not to replace God, but to entrust ourselves to Him. Don’t force hearts, but intercede. Don’t be discouraged, but continue to believe that every person can be reached by this attraction. Because faith, before being a man’s choice, is always an initiative of God. And when God begins to work in the heart, nothing remains as before.
