John 6.35-40 – Wednesday of the Third Week of Easter
What dynamics does the gift of the Eucharist bring forth within us? In today’s Gospel of John, Jesus responds by indicating two fundamental effects. The first is a deep sense of security within a relationship. Jesus says: «This is the will of him who sent me: that I lose nothing of what he has given me».
The Eucharist places us in this certainty: we are not destined to be scattered, forgotten, lost. We are guarded. We are held within a relationship that does not break. The second effect is even greater: the Eucharist introduces the seed of resurrection into our lives. In fact, Jesus adds: “And I will raise him up on the last day.” This means that eternity is sown within our existence. This changes the way you experience everything.
The Eucharist helps us redeem everything from the limits of time. What we live, what we love, what we give does not remain a prisoner of expiry. In fact, everything that is experienced in love is touched by eternity. Forms can pass, Situations can change, but love doesn’t. Love never ends. For this reason the Eucharist is not only nourishment for the present, but a transformation of our life in an eternal perspective. It teaches us to live knowing that nothing that is authentic will be lost. And perhaps this is precisely the great promise: feeling cared for and, at the same time, already experiencing something that will never end.
