John 15.9-11 – Thursday of the V Week of Easter
«Stay in my love». This is the request that Jesus makes of us on today’s Gospel page. But what does it really mean to remain in his love? It is Jesus himself who explains it: “If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love”. However we must be careful not to misunderstand these words: it is not simply a matter of following rules or obeying in a mechanical way.
Jesus is inviting us to something deeper: to trust Him. Observing his commandments means taking seriously the direction he indicates, recognizing that his way of life is the right way. In conclusion, you only trust those you love. And you can’t really trust someone without loving them. For this reason, remaining in his love means entering into a relationship of trust, not into a system of obligations. And what is the fruit of all this? “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be full.” The sign of one who remains in his love is joy. Not a superficial or momentary joy, but a full joy.
Today’s Gospel, then, invites us to verify the quality of our faith: is it a faith made up only of duties or is it a relationship lived in trust? Because if life is just a sum of duties, then we are only destined to be unhappy. But if it is a place where we truly feel in the hands of someone who loves ushere, finally, is joy.
