Long reserved for traditional Asian medicine, an ancient plant is now attracting the attention of researchers for its effective properties on hair loss.
We often hear about miracle solutions to fight hair loss, from high-tech serums to shampoos enriched with peptides, including dermatological treatments… But, this plant could well change the situation according to a very serious study published in December 2025.
Hair loss, or alopecia, is a complex phenomenon that affects both men and women, often having a serious impact on self-confidence. Whether occasional, linked to stress or seasonal changes, or more chronic due to hormonal fluctuations (such as after pregnancy or menopause), it results from a disruption of the hair life cycle. When the growth phase shortens in favor of the shedding phase, the hair gradually loses its density, revealing a thinner scalp. Until now, the solutions were often invasive or chemical, but researchers are increasingly interested in traditional pharmacopoeia to find natural and effective alternatives.
Indeed, a scientific analysis published in the Journal of Holistic Integrative Pharmacy highlights the virtues of a plant used in traditional Chinese medicine. His nickname? Polygonum multiflorum, also known as He Shou Wu in Asia, is a perennial climbing plant native to China. As part of this research, the scientists relied on both experimental laboratory work and clinical observations. Their findings show that it would act at different levels to support hair health and slow down cellular degeneration. Among the mechanisms identified is the inhibition of dihydrotestosterone, a hormone known to thin and weaken hair follicles. The plant would also help preserve follicle cells, while stimulating biological signals associated with regrowth and improvement of hair density. Finally, it could promote better irrigation of the scalp, thus allowing an increased supply of essential nutrients to the follicles. But that’s not all… This plant could also stimulate hair growth. Recent research carried out in the laboratory, devoted to the possible mechanisms of action of Polygonum multiflorum on hair follicles, has highlighted an extension of the hair growth phase.
There is therefore scientific evidence which suggests that this plant could support hair growth and slow down certain hair loss mechanisms, but be careful all the same. Larger human clinical trials are needed to confirm these effects and to understand under what conditions and at what doses, Polygonum multiflorum would really be useful.
